Historic Hotels in Downtown Savannah, Georgia

marshall house savannah ga

On the fourth floor, in the hallway, loud noises are known to take place during the early morning hours, like the thundering of a heavy object crashing to the ground. Also, door knobs to the rooms tend to wiggle as if someone is attempting to enter the room. I'm not sure of the exact intentions this impolite ghost has, but it's a safe bet that it's not the kind of room service you would want. Central location and historical significance. Loved the wine and cheese evenings with quiz or live music. Staff terrific, special shout outs to the Assistant Manager Ken, Wayne at both breakfast and the evening wine and cheese session and Carleton at the front of the house also the concierge.

The Ghosts of the Marshall House Hotel

Everything was spotless and in great repair. The location is perfect for exploring the historical district. Loved the location, the friendliness of the staff, the comfort of the parlour area and the wine and nibbles reception with entertainment. The waiter serving at this was so nice and welcoming, a credit to the hotel, he was a gentleman. Bedroom was so comfy and immaculately clean.

This privately owned and managed restaurant located in The Marshall House, an historic Savannah inn , offers a unique venue for a variety of private events and public dining. The entire building was completely renovated in 1999 reestablishing the facility to its former grandeur. Originally built in 1852 the space offers three private rooms handling events from six people to over two hundred fifty. After the hotel renovations unearthed the bones from the the Civil War soldiers, the remains were cleared, but the paranormal energy continues to exist. Guest have reported numerous accounts of the ghosts of amputee soldiers who walk vacantly and aimlessly throughout the hotel. One of these departed souls has been seen in the hotel's lobby with his missing arm in hand, pleading with the guests to help him find a surgeon.

"Stellar Savannah Experience

It is hard not to recommend the Marshall House on Broughton Street. The ghost stories and gruesome history of the Marshall House is hard to ignore. This maybe why it is featured on so many of the ghost tours here in Savannah, including our Ghost City Tour's Grave Tales of Savannah Ghost Tour. Amazing hotel, excellent location in Savannah. This place was walking distance to almost every place we wanted to go, including the riverwalk and many ... It was great staying here learning the history of this hotel.

While we don’t know exactly what the father said, you can imagine his surprise when his young daughter told him she’d seen the ghost of a woman who has been dead for decades . Perhaps they didn’t stay at The Marshall House for too much longer. Some guests have reported seeing friendly ghosts at the Marshall House.

Location

The guest rooms are extremely small for 2 people to not be on top of eachother and in each other’s way. Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply.

There's shopping and dining right outside our door, and beautiful squares and antebellum architecture at every turn. Most guests do not need their car until it's time to leave. A portrait of Mary Marshall, painted in 1830 by artist Peter Laurens, proudly hangs behind the front desk in the hotel's lobby. One day a young girl who was staying at the hotel with her father pointed to the picture of Mary Marshall and told her father that she had seen the lady in the hallway.

It’s a beautifully restored 1850’s hotel with modern comforts. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Afternoon wine and entertainment nice touch.

The Marshall House is the oldest operating hotel in Savannah and has an authentic atmosphere that's not to be missed. Built in 1851, the hotel was occupied by Union troops led by General Sherman at the end of the Civil War, and was a hospital during two Yellow Fever epidemics. In response to Coronavirus (COVID-19), additional safety and sanitation measures are in effect at this property. Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.7 for a two-person trip.

Guests have also reported hearing the distinct sound of an old-fashioned typewriter coming from the former room of author Joel Chandler Harris, who is best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Is the spirit of Joel Chandler Harris still typing away, intent on creating another tale about Uncle Remus? Others tell of a dapper gentleman reading a book by a window, a lady in white flowing through the hallways, and another ghostly woman who haunts the ladies’ restroom, and on occasion she will lock the stall. Let's just hope it is a ghost, and not some Chuck Berry copycat, with a serious fetish problem. The Marshall House’s original owner was a prominent Savannah woman. Mary M. Marshall opened the original Marshall House in 1851, and she was known as an incredibly successful businesswoman in Savannah’s elite financial and social circles.

I’ve been coming to The Marshall House since 1999. I bring friends and family and coworkers to share the amazing experience and the historic location. From Mr. C who assists with anything you need there to Stephanie at the front counter management area, and all the Chris’s, they make you feel like family coming back for a reunion every year. The rooms have great decor, and the breakfast is the best in Savannah."

Loved the Trivia Nights (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and have to give a special shout out to Mr. Carleton who welcomes guests to the hotel and is always there with an amazingly cheerful demeanor, he truly is a joy to talk to. And Wayne who leads trivia Night as well as other functions is great and always available for recommendations for restaurants and things to see around Savannah. I've stayed here several times and it's always pleasant and clean. The breakfast is always phenomenal and no other hotel compares. The Marshall House is well aware of their reputation for paranormal activity.

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia, and what that title actually means, what it brings to the table, is a whole lotta unexplainable happenings. Many of the historic buildings in Savannah, have at least one ghostly presence, frankly, it doesn't seem to matter where you go in the city, something supernatural will find you. This is especially the case with The Marshall House, as it is very conducive to paranormal activity. These spirits are some of Savannah’s friendliest ghosts. Guests of the hotel have said to have heard ghostly children playing and running down the halls late at night as well as faucets turning on by themselves.

One thing that makes the Marshall House so unique is that unlike other historic hotels in Savannah, the Marshall House was not originally a house but was built with the specific purpose of being a hotel. Mary Marshall built the hotel in 1851, on land that she'd inherited from her father, Gabriel Leaver, who was a French cabinetmaker. The Marshall House is widely considered by architectural historians to be the finest structure Mary Marshall ever built.

We loved the fact that there were historical drawings, photos and artifacts affixed to the walls throughout the hotel, with the option to take a self-guided tour by scanning a QR code for the exhibits. Built in 1851, this charming 68-room property housed Union soldiers during the Civil War -- and some guests say their spirits still walk the hallways. However, this upper-middle-range property has some of the drawbacks common to old buildings, such as noise issues, small rooms and bathrooms, and few amenities. Don’t miss the 45 Bistro, which offers a seasonal menu and an extensive wine list.

We liked the spacious one bedroom suite with view to an internal court where breakfast was served. Classical ambience with luxury details. Historic hotel with good and comfortble reception. Bottles of water, coffee and tea were complimentary, as well as a drink every evening. During the Civil War, The Marshall House was occupied by the Union and used as a hospital until the end of the war. It was also used twice more as a hospital during the yellow fever epidemics of the 19th century, and many believe ghosts still roam the 165-year-old structure. Every space in the new facility is thoughtfully designed to help the people we serve bridge their way out of homelessness and into permanent housing - from indoor plumbing and places to meet to engage in workshops, to a technology center with access to education and job training. With a large, functional kitchen our volunteers who prepare and serve meals will be able to do so with greater capacity. The new facility will provide interim housing for 60 individuals and, in the first family shelter in this region, there will be 8 separate apartment-style units that can accommodate up to 32 people. We anticipate serving over 1,000 unduplicated individuals every year at this new facility. The west-facing side of the house and the “land side” feature superimposed Doric and Ionic columns supporting a proportionally projected two-story portico. As for the river facade, this side lacks a projecting portico, but it has a classical central pediment that emphasizes the main axis.

It is not known when the present park was created, although it would seem at least possible that it was c 1700 when so much was done to the House and its surrounds. A late C18 map shows the park much as it is today, although with a rather more complex network of avenues. I suppose I should really say Brideshead Re-revisited, as Castle Howard served as the location for both the 1981 TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel (an inspiration for Saltburn), and the 2008 film version starring Emma Thompson, Ben Whishaw and Matthew Goode. But it exists in real life in the form of Drayton House in Northamptonshire, the Grade-I listed, 127-room pile belonging to the Stopford Sackville family (since the 1770s).

It’s one of a number of stately homes that have had recent film and television audiences swooning, and tourism body VisitBritain and the British Film Commission (BFC) have joined forces to capitalise on the interest.

Of course, it is never mentioned by its original name and is instead given the fictional name of ‘Saltburn’ for the sake of the film. Emerald Fennell’s movie Saltburn has led to an increased interest in a property known as Drayton House. Speaking to House and Garden, director Fennell explained that Drayton House provided the perfect setting as they could film all the action on site.

BTS’ Suga set to release concert film ‘D-Day’ this April

The current custodian, screenwriter Henry Lytton-Cobbold (author of a memoir entitled Great Great Great and self-described as “probably TMI”) is a lively blogger and presence on X, who welcomes film and television crews. The gardens – and Sebastian and Charles’s carefree enjoyment of them – are equally as famous. Not everyone has been happy with the choice of Castle Howard as the stand-in for Brideshead, however (which was actually thought to be inspired by Madresfield Court in Worcestershire). Christopher Hitchens wrote that it was too “ostentatiously massive”. Castle Howard is a spectacular baroque home which was commissioned by the third Earl of Carlisle. Its most notable elements are its giant symmetrical wings and a crowning central dome.

According to Architecture Digest, maze designer Adrian Fisher was tasked with creating an artificial maze garden. Since it could not be built in entirety, CGI was used to bring out the final picture. When scouting out a location for the film, production designer Suzie Davies says she was determined to find a place that could serve as a single filming location for the movie and has never been shown on film before. But above all, the decision came down to something beyond mere logistics. “Saltburn is about desire, obsession, and sweat,” Davies tells ELLE DECOR. “We are pulled into a storied, beautiful atmosphere, but there is trouble below the surface…[filming at Drayton House].

The film received several major award nominations, including a Golden Globe nod each for Keoghan and Pike. While the site dates back to 1066, the house is thought to have been built around 1328 and sold in 1361. It has been passed down via inheritance since, with the inhabitants making major changes to the property throughout the centuries. The film divided critics and viewers alike on its first release, with audiences loving and hating Saltburn’s graphic sex scenes and twists and turns in seemingly equal numbers. The discourse surrounding the film only continued when the film arrived on Prime Video over the festive period. The latest film from Promising Young Woman director Fennell, Saltburn follows Oxford university fresher Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) as he becomes obsessed with aristocratic fellow student Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi).

Though the film Notting Hill is largely based in … uh, Notting Hill, the location in which Julia Roberts’ film star character is filming her film (keep up) is Hampstead Heath. When Grant’s character rocks up to her set, he is actually on the grounds of Kenwood House, nestled amid the Heath – one of north London’s greenest green spaces. There is a festive event in late December, and then the house reopens for guided tours from April next year, often conducted by its current owner and featuring artefacts from the film. Built in 1611 by the first Earl of Salisbury on the site of a royal palace (which served as Elizabeth I’s childhood home), the Grade I-listed house remains in the Salisbury family today.

"In a National Trust or English heritage site, I wouldn’t be able to go near it!" Davies said. Felix and Oliver’s bedrooms are actual rooms in the house, but were altered for cinematic effect. "We flipped them around, painted them, took tapestries down, and put them back up," Davies says. "We turned a bedroom into a bathroom and a bathroom into a dressing room." In the shared bathroom that connects Felix and Oliver’s rooms – and yes, where that scene was filmed – a bath was made especially to accommodate Jacob Elordi’s 6ft 5in frame. Stopford-Sackville – who is a friend of Fennell's family – only agreed to the house being used as the location for Saltburn, so long as its name was never mentioned on screen. But a surge of interest in the home after the film's success has left him both bemused and with his privacy invaded.

Charles was an avid horticulturist and recorded thoroughly descriptive documents of his gardens from 1784 – 1820. Fans are flocking to the mansion from the movie “Saltburn” — reportedly trespassing on private land and dancing wildly outside the gates of the residence to post on social media — to the apparent annoyance of its real-life owner. In 1843 the property passed to Caroline Sackville, a niece of the previous owner, and her husband William Bruce Stopford, who brought in W A Nesfield to lay out a new parterre east of the House. The kitchen garden occupies the north-western of the four hedged compartments on the north side of the House.

To either side are iron wickets set on slightly lower piers (piers and gates listed grade I). On the east side of the forecourt is a monumental arched gateway of c 1700 leading through to the east garden, and on the west a similar arch giving access to stables. Or 30 rooms at least, as the house is still the Devonshire family home. But you can gawk at the painted hall and sculpted gallery, for instance, or perambulate around the 105-acre gardens; pre-book tickets here.

Looking back, it’s incredible to see how LA’s unique pizza culture developed over the decades. It likely started in the early ‘80s with Wolfgang Puck’s then-innovative smoked salmon pizza at Spago. But in recent years, Los Angeles saw a notable rise in non-Californian operators making the Westward leap by introducing New York, Detroit, and Neapolitan-style pizzas. Locals also threw formidable hats in SoCal’s pizza ring. The result is Los Angeles being a hotspot for excellent pizza dough topped with local ingredients by chefs who obsess over sauce and delicious pies.

In particular, the library, with its ornate pink and blue ceiling featuring paintings by Antonio Zucchi, has to be one of the most beautiful in the UK. Visitors can see works by Rembrandt, Turner, Gainsborough and Vermeer. You’ll no doubt remember Knightley’s Cecilia cooling off in the beautiful lily-adorned lake in the gardens, and then there’s the fountain scene giving La Dolce Vita a run for its money. The library in question belongs to Stokesay Court in Shropshire, which Wright first spotted in an issue of Country Life magazine. Built for the Allcroft family in 1889 by the architect Thomas Harris, the house, like many of its kind, hosted convalescing soldiers after the first world war.

You can't rent out the estate any more now that it's famous.

The home of the Catton family (played by Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant and Alison Oliver), it is where Oliver (Barry Keoghan) is invited to spend the summer and get a taste of the aristocratic life. The gothic, historical look makes it seem otherworldly, while elements like the maze on the estate become key to the plot. For Fennell, the house encapsulated the heady spirit of the film itself. “It was important to me that we were all in there together, that the making of the film in some way had that feeling of a summer where everyone loses their mind together,” she told Vanity Fair.

While filming on the grounds, Fennell built upon what was already there to create an ominous Saltburn world. Foreboding exterior shots set a sinister tone as an overbearing butler answers the door when Quick first arrives. Davies admits to augmenting the home’s exterior, the biggest intervention being a hedged labyrinth. “The maze is nearly all fictional,” she says, adding that the crew installed four giant classical minotaur sculptures on each corner of the maze for an added spooky presence. The film’s most talked-about and controversial moments take place at Saltburn (yes, including that bathtub scene), with the house providing a setting for parties, sex scenes and naked dances. And a pilgrimage to this once-quiet estate was made even easier after Rhian Williams, who lives nearby, posted detailed directions to the house in a TikTok video on New Year’s Day.

Here we have some fierce competition between stately home locations thanks to a 1999 remake of the original. The exterior shots of Hill House in the 1963 version – the 13th greatest horror film of all time, according to us – were filmed here, just outside Stratford-on-Avon in Warwickshire. The mansion was remodelled in the mid-19th century in the splendid neo-gothic style (by a pupil of Pugin no less).

That woman, Zynea Barney, told the Daily News this week that Drayton seemed like a "cool guy" initially, but when she broke up with him, he tried to strangle her until bystanders intervened. The next day he threatened to kill her and her family, she said. He used bleach to partially clean up the crime scene but intentionally left his "Egyptian cologne" behind in the hope police could link it to him.

In the footage, Williams notes that a public path runs through the property but said in an email to The Post on Monday that “there is absolutely no reason for people to stray” from the path and go onto private property. Simon of Drayton (died 1357), who several times represented the Shire in Parliament, obtained licences to crenellate and impark in 1328. In 1362 the manor passed by marriage to the Greenes; Henry Greene, executed in 1399, was considered by Leland to have built the house he saw in 1540. Drayton House (listed grade I) is a large and complex limestone building, largely of C14 to C18 date, ranged around an internal rectangular courtyard dominated by a baroque façade by William Talman (d 1719). To the south is a large forecourt with central sundial (listed grade II), probably C18. The forecourt is entered through large and elaborate iron gates of 1701 by Jean Tijou (fl 1680s-1710s) set between finely carved piers bearing the arms of Sir John Germain and his wife Lady Mary Mordaunt.

Queen Anne’s bedroom in the film is, in fact, the King James drawing room with most of the furniture removed, while the dance takes place among the glorious black-and-white chequered floor and oak-panelled splendour of the Marble Hall. According to Harper's Bazaar, the public could originally visit and arrange guided tours and private parties, but the booking website is no longer available. While Saltburn seems grand in the film, Felix's family treats the estate like a normal house. Davies told AD they had to make certain rooms messy to portray this.

In 1908 it was repurposed as one of the country’s first country clubs. Today it operates as a luxury hotel, and its 13 tennis courts host the exhibition tournament the Boodles Tennis Challenge (former competitors include Novak Djokovic). Englefield House is also private, except for big money hires, but its gardens are open to the public every Monday. Perhaps the most impressive room is the dining room, with its deep red walls.

During the time of his great-grandson Henry, second Earl of Peterborough, courtier and Catholic convert, the garden pavilions were rebuilt. Saltburn was filmed at Drayton House, a crenelated, Baroque façade mansion with 127 rooms that dates back to around 1300, and sits within a sprawling, 200-acre estate dotted with feature pools and formal gardens. You'd be forgiven for thinking the maze – famously a focal point of the film – is a star attraction, but this was actually erected in the grounds for filming and dismantled when the crew left. Another, now disused, drive runs south-east to the Thrapston to Twywell road and this has a stone lodge of 1908. Drives also run south-east, south-west and north-west from the house. Drayton Cottages, a pair of estate cottages of 1908, stand on the south-west drive.

The movie Saltburn gets its title from the name of the estate that serves as the story's primary location. While Saltburn is not a real English estate, where they filmed the movie very much is. Though the film shows that the estate has a maze garden, there is no such thing at Drayton House.

More like Wrotham Park, which is where Robert Altman and perennial country house botherer Julian Fellowes’ black comedy-mystery was filmed. The critically acclaimed whodunnit with the seemingly endless ensemble cast was shot at Wrotham for exterior and ground floor scenes, with the upstairs of Syon House used for things like Ryan Philippe unbuttoning Kristin Scott Thomas’s dress. Additional filming took place at Hall Barn in Buckinghamshire (and Shepperton Studios).Wrotham (pronounced roo-tem) Park in Hertfordshire is in the neo-Palladian style. Syon House, meanwhile, is the Grade-I listed neoclassical residence of the Duke of Northumberland (currently a dude called Ralph Percy). Can I visit? Wrotham isn’t open to the public, but you can book it for weddings, parties and corporate events – if you don’t get executed beforehand. Syon House – which reopens in March 2024 – can be visited and offers discounts to local residents, and kids under 16 go free.

It contains several glasshouses and sheds, partly of C19 date. Drayton House lies towards the centre of a roughly square park c 1km in diameter; the perimeter is defined by a ditch and a post and rail fence, and there is a shelter belt around much of the park. The interior is almost entirely permanent pasture, and there are extensive areas of well-preserved ridge and furrow, for instance between the main drive and the park's southern boundary.

This narrow and efficient lakefront home features a charming exterior composed of robust brackets, thick trim profiles and board & batten siding that brings this farmhouse-inspired home to life. Attached to the front, and forming a courtyard with the main house, is the side-loading two-stall garage. A spacious ten foot tall foyer serves as a circulation hub, accessing the home’s second floor, den, and open concept kitchen/hearth.

Drayton Hall is a two-story house capped by a double-hipped roof. The first floor consists of a four-room plan situated on a high English basement. Most rooms are laid in full paneling, painted in seafoam green with delicate carvings, elegant mantelpieces, and classical cornices.
